Joaquín Martínez Gauna is a Spanish left-back/midfielder born on 09/07/2003 (23) in Torrevieja. He is 183cm tall and weighs 70kg. The defender grew up playing for Malaga’s youth teams and is currently playing for Sevilla FC. Joaquín Martínez Gauna mainly plays as a left midfielder in a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 formation. He can also play as left-back or left winger.

From a physical standpoint, Joaquín Martínez Gauna is a mesomorph with an above-average height and a high center of gravity. He already has a strong build and well-defined musculature. He has a great step frequency and good pace. The player also has excellent agility, balance, and coordination. The player demonstrates great ball progression and very good speed, especially on long runs.

Joaquín Martínez Gauna is a full back with solid basic technique; his preferred foot is his left, but he uses his right well. The player shows good game vision, especially in short and medium passes. He possesses excellent crossing ability and great ball-striking skills. He also has great shooting and finishing abilities, paired with timing and off-the-ball movement. On the other hand, he has to improve in aerial duels to be more efficient defensively and offensively. The player has good basic technique and ball control, which allows him to dribble past defenders and maintain possession. Joaquín Martínez Gauna also has great tactical intelligence and can play in various positions.

During the possession phase, Joaquín Martínez Gauna is a modern, versatile left midfielder: he often dribbles past opponents and uses his pace to reach the byline and cross into the box. He also tries early crosses from the final third. Moreover, makes off-the-ball runs to exploit his timing and finishing into the penalty area. The Spanish defender also loves to do progressive carries and cut inside to shoot even with his weak foot. Sometimes he needs to carry the ball less and release it sooner.

During the non-possession phase, Joaquín Martínez Gauna prefers 1v1 duels, and he always tries to anticipate his opponent, even if he sometimes loses his man. He has good timing and coordination but his challenges aren’t always composed or elegant. Joaquín Martínez Gauna also needs to develop his defensive positioning, as he is sometimes caught off position, especially during opponents’ offensive transitions.

From a mental perspective, Joaquín Martínez Gauna shows courage and an elite attitude: the player always presses aggressively and is not afraid to dribble and make risky plays. He possesses typical Argentinian “garra”, work ethic and mental toughness. On the other hand, the player isn't always focused throughout the game and needs to better manage his stamina (because his game is made of high-intensity sprints).

As for the player's overall rating, Joaquín Martínez Gauna proved to be an excellent prospect with room for improvement: He excels in offensive skills, technical ability, and personality, but has to work on defensive abilities, aerial duels, stamina management, and decision-making. He has the potential to become an excellent, modern left midfielder. A player with a similar profile in today's game could be Gosens.
