Silva - Santos Borrè: was the change a good deal for Eintracht Frankfurt?

Eintracht Frankfurt has swapped strikers for the upcoming 2021-22 season. Andre Silva was sold to RB Leipzig for $25.30m while they have brought in Rafael Borre on a free transfer from River Plate.

Andre Silva has done a remarkable job ever since joining Eintracht Frankfurt from AC Milan in 2019-20. He has rediscovered his goal-scoring form that had clubs raving about his potential as this next Portuguese star when he was in Porto. He finished last season as the top scorer for the team with 28 goals and also providing 7 assists. His all-round display and his lethal finishing caught the eye of RB Leipzig where they hope to have finally filled the striker hole that Timo Werner has left.

Rafael Borre is a relative unknown in the European scene. Even back in South America, he has struggled to gain traction until the 2019-20 season when he finally started to show his lethal finishing abilities. His last full season for River Plate was back in the 2019-20 season with Covid preventing league plays in 2020. He is a natural poacher and resembles a similar game as his fellow countrymen Carlos Bacca. One who lurks in the penalty box and finishes anything that comes their way, Borre will be a natural fit for Frankfurt. He may not score as many goals as Silva does in the next upcoming season, but Frankfurt will, nevertheless, not miss a beat in terms of goals.

However, the one thing Frankfurt will miss is Silva's play-making abilities. Silva had a knack for finding his teammates in a better position at times during the season to get those 7 assists. His passing ability and vision are underrated and not thought of because of his deadly finishing abilities and his goal-scoring prowess. It is part of his game that allowed him to be more of a complete striker and opened up more opportunities for his teammates.

Borre, unfortunately, as a natural poacher does not possess the passing ability or the vision to help create chances for his teammates. He is the one on the receiving end of a pass to score the goal, not the other way around. And Frankfurt will have to adjust their style of play in order to better suit the abilities of Borre.

In order to maximize Borre's abilities, Frankfurt will need to have players that'll supply balls to Borre in the box where he is deadly. Whether that's a cross or a through ball into the box where Borre will be making that channel runs, Frankfurt will have to adjust slightly in order to maximize Borre's finishing abilities. If they expect Borre to play similarly to Silva, then the club is setting Borre up for failure and the transfer will deem a bust.

While Frankfurt will miss Silva's playmaking abilities they will not miss the goals as that void will be filled by Borre. In the end, this is a great piece of business by Frankfurt by bringing in Borre on a free and cashing in on Silva when his value was at its highest. And while Frankfurt will be helping RB Leipzig by accepting the transfer for Silva, the loss will not be as significant. There will be a loss, but Frankfurt will be in a fine position, financially as well as sportingly, as long as they utilize Borre's strengths the right way.
