Ryan Giro Gravenberch is a central midfielder born in Amsterdam, the
Netherlands, in May 2002. The young Dutch player spent his entire
childhood playing for the famed youth academy of AFC Ajax, which he
joined at the age of 8. It took him just eight years to make his debut for
Ajax’s senior team, on 23rd September 2018, at just 16 years of age. Since
then, Gravenberch has caught the attention of many European clubs and as
of today has played more than 80 games with the Ajax shirt (60 in the
Eredivisie), scoring a total of 10 goals and serving 10 assists.
The young Dutch talent is gifted with a lean, slender physique and aboveaverage
technique, Gravenberch stands out from the crowd when he
receives the ball in the middle of the field. With his 190 cm of height and an
important physical strength, the young talent often manages to dominate
the midfield, and despite his important physical presence, Gravenberch is
capable of making plays of great class and superfine. One of its
fundamental characteristics apart from physical prowess is its rides with the
ball to foot. Thanks to his physical presence and his great class and speed
in dribbling, Gravenberch has incredible attributes when turning defense
into an attack situation. It is the main characteristic of his game. He applies
such sudden acceleration to bring the ball out of trouble by performing long
progressive runs into the middle and final third of the pitch.
Gravenberch plays at such fine rhythm and is difficult to stop when at full speed.
When it comes to the most important aspect of distributing the ball at the
right moments to the right players, the 19-year-old is an expert at playing
the right pass at the right time to influence the attack. Gravenberch is also
equally important in transitions when he doesn’t have the ball, constantly
making the right movements to receive the ball or searching for empty
zones across the middle third of the pitch.
Gravenberch is also a player who likes being part of the offensive phase of
the team, being excellent with his feet, he can easily be involved in onetouch
plays, and can support his teammates in the short build-ups. The
young Dutch talent is also capable of shooting from distance, where even if
he does not shoot very often but when he does he always puts the
opposing team's goalkeeper in great difficulty. Of his 10 goals for Ajax,
Gravenberch has scored 5 goals outside the area.
Today in Erik ten Hag's Ajax, Gravenberch plays a fundamental role in the
3-man midfield and is certainly the key man in the team building maneuver.
Gravenberch is an exceptional talent, and a player of his talents will surely
get more attention as the season progresses. Despite being just 19 years of
age, this season could be a defining one for him, a chance to further stake
his claim amongst the elite in Europe.
