Rodrigo Riquelme or ‘Roro’ Riquelme is being one of the names at the start of the current season in La Liga Santander. The 22 years old Spanish attacker is having a leading role in his new club Girona FC despite his inexperience in Spanish La Liga, providing numbers and excellent football performances.
The former Atletico de Madrid footballer has adapted quickly to his new squad and is giving flashes every match of the outstanding player he can become in the future. Roro stands out for his great ball control, pace and game vision, which is allowing him to adapt to many positions, playing comfortably either in the left side or as second striker/attacking midfielder.
Roro, confident in his varied range of technical resources, does not hesitate to try to beat his man when he has the opportunity. In fact, one of his main virtues is his personality and 1 vs 1 situation bravery, isolating fullbacks (attempting 4.8 dribbles per 90 minutes) and providing verticality and imbalances for his squad. His quick feet and low center of gravity have a lot to say there, as those factors allow him to quickly change direction by body feints and excellent ball dominance. In spite of having what it takes to be a determinant player creating superiority, Roro has great room for improvement in % of successful dribbling (21,1%), having to select better moments and pitch areas to try his tricks.
When adopting inner positions, Riquelme can also make the difference, wanting to keep in touch with the ball at every moment. His good understanding of the game allows him to create spaces near the sideline to be occupied by his fullback leading to 2vs1 superiority situations. He possesses good tactical intelligence, allowing to find spaces between lines in the back of rival´s midfield, having space and time to provide a filtered key pass to strikers, or turn around thanks to his great oriented ball control and make a solo run gaining metters for his team. Not only coming to associate with teammates, he has great intuition to interpret the partner´s movement and provide a perfectly timed vertical run attacking spaces, showing great pace.
Having to play as center forward in some matches, an aspect where he has improved is his definition, being actually the goalscorer of the squad alongside Stuani. The young attacker is showing clinical finishing, and a huge increase in the shots tried in each match. Roro averages 2.65 shots per match, with almost half of them being on target. This shows the great shooting he has, either from short or long range distances, having great ability to prepare the shooting quickly, without space and in almost every position of the field.
His off the ball contribution shows his dedication for the club he plays, having great work rate in the pressing and being aggressive despite his lack of corpulence. His leadership and confidence may be two remarkable aspects of his game, wanting to be protagonist when matches get difficult, asking for the ball and carrying the team on his back.
