Rasmus Hojlund is one of the new wonder kids in Italian Serie A. The 19 years old (04/02/2003) Danish attacker is having an incredible impact on his first season playing for Atalanta, having already scored 5 goals and provided two assists, earning a place in the starting XI for Atalanta in the most recent matches.
Formed in his home country´s Copenaghue´s academy, where he made his professional debut, he was early transferred to Austria, where he had an outstanding season playing for Sturm Graz before arriving to Atalanta in last summer's transfer window.
Hojlund starts as a center forward, being able to perform as the reference man or together with another striker as seen this season alongside Duvan Zapata. The Danish striker stands out for his huge physicality and great positioning and goalscoring nose.
One of his main virtues is his tactical understanding of the game in the last meters. His movements inside and around the penalty box are a complete nuisance for defenders, either in order to create space and shooting chances for himself or his teammates. He does have the goal between his eyebrows, and his 2,62 shots/90´stats shows so, selecting and obtaining optimal positions thanks to his ability to get away from his coverage man. Half of the shots tried per match are on target, an aspect that reflects his good striking ability, either with his weak foot. Despite these facts, Hojlund is much more than the kind of forward that stays near the 18 yards box. He loves to take part in the link up play. He usually tends to drop into deeper positions in midfield, dragging defenders out of position and creating spaces behind the opponents defense, a play that has given great results to Atalanta, with Lookman and Boga attacking those spaces in fast transitions. In those situations coming to receive between lines, his physicality allows him to absorb impacts while protecting the ball in order to turn around powerfully or play the ball maintaining possession. When struggling to link up, his high structure is also an alternative, playing directly and looking for him to aerially win first and second balls, to construct the play in advanced positions. Moreover, he must work on his aerial winning rate, as an important aspect of his game he barely succeeds in 35%.
Unlike most of the players with his physicality and corpulence, Hojlund possesses high agility and technical skills. He is brave to go beat his man in one-on-one situations when he drops laterally to receive the ball, trying to find striking or crossing opportunities. He also has quick feet in order to operate in tight spaces and then surpass rivals by powerful runs, having a great first acceleration and change of pass. In that sense, his characteristics and personality are reminiscent of the kind of forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic is, saving distances.
