Mateo Joseph Fernández-Regatillo, born in Santander, Cantabria, on 19 October 2003, is one of the most interesting young strikers on the radar of the Spanish national team.
He is currently a regular in the U21 squad, having also played for the national team in other categories, as in the case of the U20 World Cup in 2023.
After being trained in the youth ranks of Racing Santander, soon he made the leap to the academy of RCD Espanyol in Barcelona, where he remained until 2021. In January of the same year, Leeds United recruited him to strengthen their under-23 squad. However, he is now an important player in the first team in a new fight for promotion to the Premier League.
The truth is that Mateo Joseph's physical and technical qualities make him an ideal player for english football. He is a forward with great mobility, long stride and very powerful in open spaces. He is also a technically right player, which allows him to play in various attacking positions, either as a striker or on both wings. He has a good associative ability, a good passing range and a great shot with both legs.
Tactically, however, this is the area of greatest room for improvement in the striker's development. Despite being a mobile player, good at receiving and offloading the game, he tends tends to lower his levels of attention during matches, which led him to make some decision-making errors, something that, on the other hand, could be considered natural for a striker of his age and features.
Finally, the player's mentality speaks of a player with a great deal of personality, voracity, aggressiveness and self-confidence, values which, together with his physical, technical and tactical characteristics, could make the Spanish striker a player of great relevance in the elite of European football.
