The talented Belgian footballer Malick Fofana is one of the few good news for Olympique Lyonnais this season.
Born on 31 March 2005 in Aalst, Belgium, he started playing football at youth level for SC Eendracht Aalst in his hometown. It was in 2014 when he was signed by KAA Gent at the age of 9 and from there he completed his youth training and started his youth career.
At the age of 16, he signed his first professional contract, creating a link with Gent until 2024. In addition, that same 21/22 season he was called up to the senior squad for the first time, making his professional debut in a Belgian Super Cup match against Club Brugge KV.
It was in January 2024 that he signed for his current club, Olympique Lyonnais, with whom he made his debut in Ligue 1 2023-24 just four days later.
The young winger, although of Guinean origin, has represented the Belgium national team at U-15, U-17, U-18, U-20 and U-21 level, being one of the key players of the national team in all of them and even making his debut in an official match with the senior team this 2024 in the UEFA Nations League.
In term of his qualities on the pitch, Fofana is an extremely destabilizing player. He has a great dribbling ability from the winger position and a good cross from wide-open areas.
His dribbling is mainly enhanced by his physical condition. He has a wicked acceleration, which helps him a lot in overtaking opponents when driving with the ball. He is powerful, strong on ball protection, and capable of repeating efforts at very high intensity.
Tactically, however, he still looks like a player to be developed. He tends to lose position, suffers from lapses in concentration and struggles to recover his defensive position in transition situations.
Mentally, lastly, we must highlight the personality, magic and leadership of such a young player, as he is being able to carry the offensive responsibility of a team as important in France as Olympique Lyonnais is.
