Florian Wirtz is an 18-year-old German attacking midfielder who currently plays forn Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. The young attacking midfielder took his first steps in football with the Brauweiler youth squad, before moving to Köln U17 and eventually being taken over by Leverkusen U19. Today at the young age of 18, Wirtz is one of the protagonists of the team coached by Seoane.
Wirtz is a very ductile player, he is an offensive midfielder that likes to drop back to get the ball and participate in the construction of the game. He has the ability to create very important offensive situations where every now and then he is also capable of making excellent insertions to score goals. One of the things that stand out in Wirtz's game is his movement of him during the different phases of possession. He is constantly able to create space for himself to catch the ball and will achieve this in many different ways.
Firstly, Wirtz is gifted with a fair amount of freedom to move where he wants and that causes him to drop into deeper areas than one might expect from a number 10. With Seoane's lineup looking to play from behind, Wirtz makes moves in his half to get the ball more easily. The young German plays with a high awareness of what is happening around him and this allows him to maintain possession even when he is closely marked. Even when breaking forward, Wirtz’s movement shows an incredibly high level of maturity and game IQ for a player of his age. Wirtz understands that he can create room for himself by actually doing very little, where he sometimes does a fake movement to attack the area but then stays back to receive the ball.
Last season Florian Wirtz finished the year with very promising numbers for a very young player, playing his very first year in the first squad of Leverkusen, finishing the season with an overall of 23 games scoring 11 goals and 4 assist. This season Wirtz is showing a great personality and becoming always more fundamental for Leverkusen’s game, the young rising star has already played 20 overall games for Bayer’s shirt and has 8 goals and 11 assists. We can already see a big improvement in his numbers, showing that not only he can score goals but he is fundamental for creating chances and making his teammates score.
Wirtz is only second to Müller in the top assist in the Bundesliga, with 8 assists in 14 matches. Wirtz is able to find the smallest of gaps to play into and has a short backlift before playing the pass, sometimes catching defenders by surprise. He hits his passes with the required weight to get them past the last line of the defense, yet with no overrun where the keeper can sweep the ball. The passing and the vision Wirtz has for such a young player is impressive, he can not only find teammates with a good pass but his accuracy and his decision-making are enviable, at just 18 years of age he looks to have a mindset like a very experienced player, making many big clubs in Europe seriously interested in him.
Wirtz is an incredibly well-rounded midfielder. He has quality ball-control and mastery which is seen in his dribbling and array of passes that he uses to pick apart defenses. His movement is intelligent in both build-up play as it is in the final third and not only is he a consistent creator but he scores goals with regularity too. It is not an overstatement to say that Wirtz is currently one of Europe’s best attacking midfielders. It could well be argued he is also playing the best football out of any teenager in Europe, being already the present and future of the German national.
