Ignacio Ezequiel Agustín Fernández Carballo (Buenos Aires, 25 July 2002), better known as "Equi", has established himself this season as one of the most promising players in Argentinian football.
After joining Boca Juniors in 2012 and working his way through the team's youth categories, he made his professional debut in May 2021, in a Professional League Cup match, at the age of just 18.
In February 2022, he was loaned to CA Tigre for a season, where he made great performances, being a frequent starter of the team and playing a total of 42 matches between Professional League, Professional League Cup and Argentine Cup.
His successful loan spell led to Boca Juniors requesting his return for the 22/23 season. Since then, Equi became one of the most important pieces of the team, being a very influential player from the midfield position, which attracted the attention of many clubs.
His high rated performanced last season caused his move this summer to the Saudi side Al-Qadsiah, where he is already a regular starter playing almost every minute so far this season.
At international level, having played for all categories of the national team, the Argentinean midfielder has recently made his debut as a player of the Olympic team (U23) at the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
In terms of his characteristics as a player, he is a very dominant player both on and off the ball. Technically, Fernández has a wide range of passing with his left foot, an accurate and imposing carrying with the ball and an excellent long-distance throw. He is also a very coordinated player in tackling and stealing the ball on the defensive technical area.
Tactically, the player's skills make him a very important asset in high pressing contexts, due to his intuition and aggressiveness in defending forward. On the ball, he is a very intelligent and balanced player, although he still has room for improvement in aspects related to decision making, order, positioning, etc.
Regarding his physical qualities, despite being an apparently lightweight and slim player, Equi is a real duel winner. He is strong in individual duels, especially on the ground, and has a great aerobic and general work capacity, which allows him to cover a large area of the pitch.
Mentally, lastly, we find in the player some of the most common characteristics of the Argentinian midfielder: leadership, passion, sacrifice and team spirit. Characteristics that make Equi a very exciting player to watch in the near future.
