Andriy Lunin is a Ukrainian goalkeeper, born in Krasnohrad on 11 February 1999, is currently the second goalkeeper of Real Madrid. There was always big interest in the young goalkeeper who in fact made his debut in 2016 with just 17 years in the Ukrainian championship with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk. That season Lunin played a total of 25 games with 10 matches without conceding a goal, from that moment he began to have the attention of various clubs, so in the following season, he moved to Zorya Lugansk also in Ukraine. After playing only one season with the Lugansk shirt, the young talent was immediately taken from Real Madrid at the age of 19 for a sum of 8.5 million euros.

Since his arrival at Real Madrid, the young Ukrainian has never had that continuity and that opportunity to play matches on matches that a goalkeeper of his age would need. In fact, this is the first season where Lunin remained in Madrid without transferring to any Spanish team on loan. After various loan experiences in Leganés, Real Valladolid, and Real Oviedo, today Andriy Lunin is officially the second Real Madrid goalkeeper behind the giant Courtois. The young talent in these various experiences has never managed to impose himself, except when he went to play in the Spanish second division with Real Oviedo in the 2019/20 season. In La Liga2, Lunin achieved the continuity he needed with 20 appearances and a total of 6 clean sheets.

From what Lunin showed at a very young age in Ukraine and later with the Real Oviedo shirt, it can be seen that the young Ukrainian is very good when closing down against an opponent. Lunin is a keeper who reacts well to any situation in front of him, very good on high ball outings. From a very young age, he shows very sureness when jumping to hit the ball with his knuckles, which is something very important for a goalkeeper to have. He is very reactive to both high and low shots, where he has to be quick with his hands and feet, this quickness of thought and movement also allows him to be a good penalty keeper. In fact, Lunin up to now, in his young career, has managed to block 7 penalties out of 18 total, which is not a bad number for a goalkeeper of his age and especially for the lack of continuity that he receives.

What we can say about Andriy Lunin is that he hasn’t yet had the opportunity to start making Real Madrid and the Ukrainian national team pay attention to him. There is no doubt that the 22-year-old goalkeeper has experience and talent backing him up but he needs to play more often and that’s difficult for a backup goalkeeper, especially at a team like Real Madrid. For Lunin at the age of 22, the time has come to look for a club that allows him to have the continuity that a goalkeeper of his age and talent needs, so as to show all the qualities that brought him to Real Madrid at 19.
