PSV Eindhoven’s Denzel Dumfries announced himself on the world stage with Netherlands’ EURO 2020 opening game winner against Ukraine in a thrilling 3-2 encounter at the Amsterdam Arena. The 25-year-old had already made his presence known on the club stage with PSV since moving from Herenveen in 2018 and especially in the 2020/21 Eredivisie season – where he scored 4 goals and established 9 assists in 41 appearances.

The Rotterdam-born right back started his playing career at one of the largest amateur sports club in Netherlands, Barendrecht. His hometown club Sparta Rotterdam gave him his first chance at playing professional football in 2014 and he made his debut on the top stage in 2015 with FC Emmen. Owing to his Aruba ancestry, Dumfries was offered a place in the Aruba national football team and he initially took it and made his international debut against Guam aged just 18. On the club stage, his exceptional performances for Sparta helped the club gain promotion to Eredivisie in 2016, as he was declared the Eerste Divisie Talent of the Year that very 2015/16 season. Soon after, his talent was recognized by the Netherlands U20 setup, before being called up to the senior side by Ronald Koeman in 2018.

It was in the 2018/19 Eredivisie season that Dumfries truly entered the limelight as he was named in the Eredivisie Team of the Year, thanks to PSV’s second placed finish only 3 points behind high-flying champions Ajax, who had embarrassed Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

As a dynamic right-back, Dumfries is known to be a strong athletic presence on the right wing. He is a ball-winner who possesses the capacity to shrug off oncoming attackers, keep possession and spread passes along his line. Dumfries is a team player who prefers to stride down the right wing with tremendous force, linking up with his teammates enroute. He has a great record of scoring goals (13 for PSV so far) and providing assists through incisive passes and crosses from the wings.

Standing at almost 6 feet, Dumfries has a strong physique that allows him to take on challenges without thinking twice. His strength & stamina allows him to function for full ninety minutes without losing breath.

He doesn’t lack the will to track back once he has driven himself forward all the way to the latter end of the pitch in an attacking stance. Also, his fearless attitude to lunge into challenges is a worthy attribute worthy of mention – something that has saved goals for the teams he has played for. With long strides, Dumfries can dribble well and also distribute the ball into attacking spaces.

The kind of player who would suit a Premier League setting, Everton are already said to be interested in him after his EURO 2020 opening day heroics. As are Napoli from Serie A. Owing to its defensive prowess, the Italian league also displays an environment where he can possibly succeed at the highest levels. Dumfries’ value has risen in recent weeks and months and it is almost certain that he will be moving to greener footballing pastures in the next season or so.
