Georges Mikautadze looks set to establish himself in elite football. The Georgian striker, who is only 23 years old and 176 cm tall, is impressing on the international scene with his ability to perform as single striker in attack.
This season, he has made a total of 31 appearances for two clubs: 9 appearances for AFC Ajax, club to which he belongs; and 22 for FC Metz, where he has stayed on loan from mid-season.
Born in Lyon (France) on 31 October 2000, the player also holds Georgian nationality. In fact, it is the national team he has represented since he made his debut on 25 March 2021. He is currently one of the most valuable players in his national team, being the player with the most goals scored at the end of the group stage at this year's UEFA EURO 2024.
Due to his career at club level, his breakthrough in elite football could be considered a pleasant surprise. His football background and training took place in France, where he played for clubs such as FC Gerland (2007-2008), Olympique Lyonnais (2008-2015) and AS Saint-Priest (2015-2017). In 2017 he joined Metz, but it would not be until 2019 that he would sign his first professional contract with the club.
His consecutive loans at RFC Seraing (20/21) in the Belgian Second Division, to which he would return in 21/22 with the club already promoted to the first national division, allowed him to establish himself as a first-team player in Metz next year, with whom he got the promotion to Ligue 1 in the 22/23 season, and where he also performed at such a high level that AFC Ajax paid over 15 million euros for him last summer.
Despite his medium height for a centre-forward position, Mikautadze is a tremendously self-sufficient and versatile player. He is capable of both playing in the half spaces, receiving the ball between lines and participating in the building, and attacking the open spaces. In addition to that, his powerful lower body also makes him an absolute winner in individual duels both offensively and defensively.
Technically, we are talking about a remarkably gifted player. He has a wide range of passing, both short and long, a great shot from outside the box and a very clean ball control and carrying. In fact, along with his 1 versus 1 ability, this is one of his greatest strengths, being able to overcome lines and opponents from his powerful running with the ball.
Perhaps it is the tactical side of his game, along with the psychological side, where he has the most room for improvement. He is a disciplined player with good decision making, however, he can improve his work off the ball.
Finally, as for the mental aspect, we are talking about a charismatic player with a strong personality, but we can observe in his game some typical traits of youth that he will have to mature, such as occasional loss of attention to the game, lack of concentration and control of impulsivity.
Even so, his aggressiveness, determination and hunger at only 23 years of age suggest a great future potential for this striker in international football.
